What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website's content so that AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Gemini — can extract, quote, and cite it directly in their responses. Where traditional SEO competes for a ranked list of links, AEO competes to be the answer itself.
Why AEO matters now
A growing share of searches never reach a list of blue links. The user asks a question, an AI assistant reads dozens of pages, and it returns a single synthesized answer with a handful of citations. If your page isn't structured for extraction, it won't be one of those citations — no matter how well it ranks in classic search.
The shift is simple but significant:
- Search engines send you traffic by ranking your page.
- Answer engines send you credibility (and often traffic) by quoting your page.
What answer engines look for
Answer engines favor content they can lift with confidence. In practice, that means:
- A direct answer near the top. State what something is, who it helps, and the outcome in the first 40–80 words. Definition-style openings and short "TL;DR" summaries are easy to quote.
- Question-shaped headings. Real questions as H2s and H3s ("What is AEO?", "How much does it cost?") map cleanly to the questions users actually ask.
- Structured elements. Ordered lists, comparison tables, and short definition blocks are far more citeable than dense paragraphs.
- FAQ content with matching schema. A visible FAQ paired with
FAQPageJSON-LD tells the engine exactly which answer belongs to which question. - Clear entity signals.
Organization,WebSite, andSoftwareApplicationschema help the engine identify who is behind the claim.
A quick self-check
Ask yourself, for any important page:
- Could an AI assistant answer the question "what does this company do?" using only the first paragraph?
- Are your key facts inside a list or table, or buried in prose?
- Does every FAQ answer stand on its own without "see above"?
If the answer to any of these is "no," you have AEO work to do.
AEO and SEO are not the same
AEO doesn't replace SEO — it sits on top of it. You still need crawlable pages, fast load times, and good titles. But AEO adds a layer: making the content itself extractable. For a deeper comparison, see AEO vs GEO vs SEO.
Where to start
The fastest wins are usually:
- Add a direct-answer paragraph to the top of your most important page.
- Convert a few key sections into lists or a comparison table.
- Add a real FAQ with
FAQPageschema. - Add
OrganizationandWebSiteschema to identify your brand.
